Deon Van Der Vyver

Personal Note

As a lifelong sports enthusiast, finding a competitive, inclusive sport like lawn bowls has been life-changing. It’s one of the few sports where athletes with disabilities can truly compete alongside able-bodied players without equipment or rule modifications. I remain committed to the game and to representing South Africa with pride at every level.

Classification: B6 | Disability Bowler (Wheelchair)
Date of Birth: 8 September 1972

I was introduced to the sport of lawn bowls in 2002 by fellow disabled bowler and then-Protea, Glyn Thompson. Since then, bowls has become an integral part of my life—not just as a competitive outlet, but as a sport that bridges the gap between para and able-bodied athletes. As a paraplegic since 1991 and a B6-classified bowler, I’ve always appreciated the unique inclusivity of bowls: using the same equipment, playing on the same greens, and competing on equal footing.

I exclusively use Henselite bowls, which I find ideal for the diverse green conditions we experience across South Africa.
